We’re in the middle of final preparations and there is one thing that people keep asking us, what are you bringing with you to relieve the boredom?
Considering we are already taking music and audiobooks, we thought we’d give Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs a go:
How to Save a Life by The Fray: I have a habit of overplaying songs and this was my soundtrack for the majority of my teenage years.
American Pie by Don Mclean: Firstly, its 8mins long, well we do have time on our hands and I do know every word! Plus it reminds me of rowing training at school, we were not a cool club!
Honour Him, the theme from the film The Gladiator: I do find this inspiring and considering all the lead character went through, I emotionally connect to him on some level.
Circle of Life by Elton John: It’s a feel-good piece and will definitely cheer both of us up when we need it most.
Pirates of the Caribbean Theme by Hans Zimmer; I think that there will be times where both of us are hallucinating and feeling like pirates (or there might be pirates nearby so feel like this is fitting!)
Sort of an easy one for me, I was always a big Harry Potter fan growing up and was always first to read the books as they came out. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it’s the longest and bound to keep me occupied!
It has to be a cigar. Although I have never been a big cigar smoker, having given up smoking a year ago, if I’m all alone on an island then that’s the time to break the habit. Actually, in light of that, a packet of cigarettes would be my luxury item!
Apache by Sugar Hill Gang: I think we will need something upbeat at the start of the row and if we need an upbeat song while we’re in a storm, this is the one!
Baba O’ Reilly by The Who: The rhythm is really important, so I’ve tried to find a song to keep me in the mood for when I need to settle into a consistent row. It’s a song that hasn’t failed me yet!
Life Goes On by Noah and the Whale: This song has been important to me during many parts of my life, both lyrically melodically. The title says it all really!
Baywatch Theme: I feel that this song will help prepare for the finish, and of course the party with family and friends! So I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate, plus I’ll be doing my best impersonation of the Hoff!
Harry Potter Audiobook: Stealing from Ted (but he did go first), I will need Stephen Fry’s dulcet tones to help me go to sleep and bring calm to the boat!
Catch 22; I’ve only read it once a few years ago and took me six months to read but by the end, I didn’t want it to finish. I think this will mirror how I feel about the row, it will be an initial struggle but it will all come together in the end.
One item I wish I could take is a hammock. There is nothing better than just sitting in a hammock on a beach with a cold beer, sadly the boat will be the opposite of this!
That’s our choices, let us know what you think in the comments below.
Many thanks to all those who have already donated, we are incredibly touched by your generosity.
We’ll be back shortly with our final preparations before our departure on 15 March.
